Form and Substance: Projection Mapping in Contemporary Art.

Projection Mapping is the premier artistic technique of our age. Projection Mapping (also called Video Mapping) utilizes specialized software to create a projected image that perfectly fits any desired surface, including irregularly shaped screens, 3 dimensional objects, architecture, etc. changing its very nature; allowing for the surface in question to convey any message that the artist desires. When done right, the result is magical. “Form and Substance” brings together work by several prominent artists in this field to create and activate paintings, sculptures and installations.

Onionlab presents Evolució, a piece that revolves around the graphic and sound abstraction of the concept it is named after: evolution. It is construed as transformation, construction and alteration of reality through time; evolution as a discontinuous creation process as well.

Created with 3D projection mapping techniques, this time, Evolució was projected onto the façade of the Musées d’art et d’histoire de Genève, though the piece takes the evolution concept even further: It was conceived as an open transformation process so that it can also be adapted to different façades and projection surfaces, and so that Evolució can continue its transformation process.

Fragmental is a tetrahedron based geometric sculpture - designed as a surface for typographic animations. Using the projection mapping technique we get an illusion of depth & perspective that gives the different kinds of letters a new dimension in space & time.

St Lucas university college of art & design presented me the task of creating a Font machine. A machine that on its own creates an unique font. I have chosen light as my medium for creating the 26 characters of the alphabet. By using the projection mapping technique where the light acts as the medium for the machine - I was able to bring the full alphabet to life.

The Lumiphonic Creature Choir ~ by Synarcade

The Lumiphonic Creature Choir is a unique new interactive instrument that fuses music, visuals and sculpture together. It is a giant audio-visual creature of twelve disembodied heads on long medusa-like necks that sing or recite prose as you press a button.

The Lumiphonic Creature Choir is currently being used as part of a groundbreaking multimedia pop band. It can be also used for installations, spoken word, performances and for unique musical education purposes.

The 10 year celebration theme for Roppongi Hills is “LOVE TOKYO.” We will be starting a movement here from Roppongi Hills to transform Tokyo into a more attractive and exciting “world-class city.” We are opening a 10th anniversary website in which users can experience 3D projection mapping on a miniature model of the city of Tokyo at a 1:1000 scale.
Participants can enjoy various motifs of the city: “Futuristic City,” “Rock City,” and a traditional Japanese “Beauty of Nature” motif by pressing the keys on a keyboard, as if playing the piano. Exploit the possibilities and make Tokyo more dynamic and exciting.

Pirelli Tower, historic symbol of Milan and milestone in contemporary architecture, for the first time ever has been the stage of a projection mapping.
At the launch of Adidas Boost in Italy, each of 9000 square meters of the facade came to life, resulting in a show of monumental proportions. The building was shaken by vibrations of energy, bent, broken, torn, and even brought down.
The projections also accompanied the exhibition of Thomas Dold (vertical running world champion) who raced up the stairs of the 31 floors of the skyscraper reaching the top in less than four minutes (vimeo.com/63239462), while the public was able to follow real time data on its performance on the tower facade, transformed for the occasion into a giant screen.
Before and after the show, with the screening of live tweets and instagram photos from the public, the building has become an antenna that reverberated expectations and reactions to the accomplishment of Dold.

The Topography Project

Topography is a project that uses dance, projections, film and music to explore global and personal landscapes of body, thought, space, and time. It implements the use of an exciting new body-mapping, projection technology, and has been a true collaboration of effort and love. ‘Topography’ is a term used in map making. Often Topographies are detailed descriptions, drawings and 3D representations of the physical features of a place or region, especially in the form of contour maps. Topography, the film, seeks to explore this idea with the landscape of the human body. Much like navigating terrain, the body and the physical perimeters of the space alternately take on the function of map and means, path and pathos, guide and guided.

Tearing Shadow is a new projection sculpture by Berlin-based artist Robert Seidel. Fragments of projection, sculpture and sounds perfoliate the gallery space, allowing the viewer to create endlessly varied audio-visual compositions by wandering around, essentially becoming a part of the artwork itself.

Loosely inspired by the work and research of deep-sea expert Peter A. Rona, the piece abolishes notions of scale by contrasting micro-architecture with human construction.
Fascinated by the marks left by unknown creatures called Paleodictyon Nodosum, the scientist offers the hypothesis that these hexagonal structures are designed in order to cultivate bacteria.

A modern day Captain Nemo, Peter A. Rona wanders relentlessly across the seabed looking to discover these living creatures, of which we only know of their mysterious geometrical makeup, reminiscent of the Centre Pompidou’s hexagonal shape frame.

People are invited to stand in the middle of the installation and have a sound and light experience that is inspired by the speed of light and the quest for other dimensions of consciousness.
